Telecommunications, also known as telecom, is the exchange of information over significant distances by electronic means and refers to all types of voice, data and video transmission. This is a broad term that includes a wide range of information-transmitting technologies and communications infrastructures, such as wired phones; mobile devices, such as cellphones; microwave communications; fiber optics; satellites; radio and television broadcasting; the internet; and telegraphs.

A server rack is a structure that is designed specifically to house technical equipment including routers, switches, hubs, and of course, servers. The rack makes it possible to securely hold multiple pieces of equipment in one area. Server racks are typically going to be used by businesses (and smaller ones for residential) and kept either in data centers or communications closets.

A patch panel provides a way to keep large numbers of cables organized, enabling flexible connectivity into network hardware located in a data center or an access or wiring closet. The most common type of patch panel is used within an organization's LAN.
